April kicks off with a bang with the Easter Holidays. As usual, our opening hours are extended to 10am every morning and we will be running a full program for children and families to #GetClimbing.
We’ve also got the NuKids Masters Weekender, the greatest climbing competition in the country for people climbing up to Font 6b, with Qualifiers and a Grand final on the DMM Comp Wall. We’re also eagerly awaiting the April Showers following the installation of our new (watertight) roof. Have a great April.
As mentioned above, we’ll be open from 10am everyday during the Easter School Holidays and here’s our opening hours for Easter Weekend:
GOOD FRIDAY: 10:00 – 18:00
EASTER SATURDAY: 10:00 – 18:00
EASTER SUNDAY: 10:00 – 18:00
EASTER MONDAY: 10:00 – 18:00
We’ve recently invested in a 4 more ‘Auto Belays’ to add to the existing 2, bringing the total to 6! Auto belays are safety devices which allow you to climb the higher climbing walls without the need for a belayer – the person who ‘holds the other end of the rope’ while you climb.. Auto belays are perfect for when you can’t find a friend to belay you, great for stamina training (repeating laps on the wall), as well as being fun for younger children who maybe find the bouldering walls a bit too challenging.
To celebrate this fantastic addition to the centre, we’re going to be offering Free Auto Belay Inductions to all adults who are registered for Bouldering Only. The inductions will cover how to put on harnesses correctly, clip into the auto belay, climb, and descend safely. After the induction, you will need to complete an Auto Belay form and then you will be able to use the Auto Belays any time.
The Inductions will become available after Easter – watch this space.
To make the most of the Auto Belays, we’ve launched HIGHBALLPLAY, a fun supervised climbing session for children age 4+. HIGHBALLPLAY replaces LittleBlocs and to a certain extent FunBlocs (Climbing) and we’ve increased the age range (following feedback from parents) so siblings and friends of different ages will be able to take part together – and parents don’t have to book different sessions for children.
The introductory launch price is just £10.50 p/person but it won’t stay that price for long… so get booked on this Easter! Read more here.
Pizzas return over Easter! They’ll making their 2017 debut on Friday 7th April for the Nukids Masters Weekender, popping up again on Sunday 9th for the final. They will then be available every Thursday night and comp nights (weather permitting)
From week commencing the 17th of April, setting as you know it at Highball will be changing. We will be moving to Zonal setting which means we will be setting a piece of wall at a time rather than a circuit, There will be a full news piece explaining it – coming very soon – but one of the biggest benefits of this form of setting is that everyone will get something new to climb, every time we do a reset, plus we’ll be able to add and change the volumes.
Our school holiday program is available to view and book online. February Half Term completely sold out well before the holidays started so we have tweaked the program to create more spaces – book early to guarantee your place as we can’t the weather!! Click here to book. There’s also a brand new session being launched called HIGHBALLPLAY – more info coming later this month..
The NuKids Masters event will be taking place this weekend. Qualification spaces are filling up quick; and the later session is almost fully booked! If you are looking to get involved or would like some more info on what we think is one of the only comps of its type around then head to our dedicated NuKids Masters page. We will be firing up the pizza oven both on the Friday night and Sunday afternoon offering some of our amazing freshly made Pizzas – Keep an eye out on our social feeds to see the menu.
We have now had delivery of our Spring/Summer ranges from Rab,Black Diamond and Moon with just PRANA still to come. The shop is looking colourful with everything you need to keep you crushing as the temperatures start to rise, from shorts to vests. A personal favorite would be the mojo short a long standing climbing/yoga short from Prana which is made from fully recycled materials, it dries quickly (I use mine as swimming/DWS shorts) and is very breathable. It also has a inseam gusset which allows a complete range of movement no matter how high you have to get those feet.
With the weather getting warmer, we’ve a great offer to help keep your new climbing shoes fresh by offering 20% off Boot Bananas with every purchase of climbing shoes or climbing trousers.
If you’re looking to expand your climbing and have a go outside then we will also be doing 20% off all Bouldering pads. Stay Safe
This year there is going to be a small change to the Summer and Winter bouldering league comps. As some of you are aware we are moving over to Zonal setting from late April. To help with the spread of people around the centre we have decided that we will run an extra round of the summer league for 2017 and an extra 2 rounds of the winter league. This means that the DMM Comp Wall will be re-set almost every month. The idea will be to set it over 2 days and put up 40 blocks each time. 30 will be used for the league as per our usual set up. This gives you amazing people an extra 10 blocks on the comp wall each set. The first round will be in May instead of the usual start in June.
Nukids Qualifiers set by Thomas,Guy, Rob Napier and Jack
Nukids Final will again be set this year by Rob and Jack
Zone 1 will be set by Mr Pickles.
“New to Highball; not new to instructing” was how I introduced myself to our regular young climbers back in the depth of Winter. It’s now three months later, Summer is almost upon us, and the centre gets brighter and brighter everyday. It’s been an interesting and fun-filled ride so far.
Getting to know all the staff, the NICAS/NIBAS candidates and their parents, and as many of the regular climbers as possible has been great and I’m very much looking forward to meeting and getting to know many more over the coming months.
When I first knew I was returning to Norwich, I put together a (very short) list of climbing centres I wanted to work at, and Highball came top by a long long way. Im very grateful to all the crew for the welcome and I still myself grinning from ear to ear at thought that “I work here”.
Thanks to everyone for making my time here so far so enjoyable, and remember: You can only be as tall as you are – Get those feet up!
