Spring is in the air and the roller door has been opened on more than one occasion already. It’s really nice to allow the fresh air in after the last few dark cold months. The roof will be finished soon and the scaffolding removed and it won’t be long before we start our annual spring clean, so expect to see cleaner carpets, a reduction in dust and some fresh paint here and there.

THE WINTER BOULDERING LEAGUE – FINAL REPORT
The Grand Finale took place on Highball’s infamous Comp wall on Saturday 25th February. The competition was fierce and the problems were challenging, to say the least. Alex Fry was on top form setting Round 4 on Friday, followed by 8 impressive routes for the Final on Saturday.
The Women’s comp was an impressive mix of juniors and seniors, especially as it was an adult set. Everyone put it in a great effort, though Block 4 proved just out of reach with zero tops. Lizzie Nichols and Alissa Mardle stood out, and positioned 1st and 2nd respectively, shortly followed by Juliet Scott and Lily Nunn. In the Men’s comp, Blocks 1 & 3 were too much for our finalists, but 8 out of 10 competitors nailed Block 4 on their first try! John Golder put on a fantastic performance and came first.
Garry Smith, Matt Catchpole, and Andrius Zukas were gunning for second place, and ended up coming 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively. All in all, a fantastic day with lots of support from a great crowd, superb volunteer Judges and Brushers, and our beautiful Highball team.
There were lots of prizes thrown into the audience and both first place winners went home with snazzy new Scarpa climbing shoes and Dakine rucksacks, generously donated by our mates at Snowfit Revolutionz. Thanks to everyone who took part in our Winter Bouldering league and to the 20 finalists for putting on an entertaining show. Also, thanks to our sponsors Scarpa and Snowfit Revolutionz for supplying us with great giveaways and supporting our competition!

VIEW FROM THE CREW – JAMES POTTER
I have been working at highball for around about a year, but have climbed here since it opening and in that time I have seen how East Anglia’s climbing mecca we call Highball has grown. In 4 years we have seen the building of the cave area, training sections, traverse wall, the woody and even the comp wall and cafe have grown in substantial size, but not only that the customers coming here have increased dramatically since then too. Different people from all walks in life come in and out of Highball and I’m thankful to hear their stories as well as watching each and every one grow and become much more here at our centre.
