The Summer Bouldering League is over! On Friday night, the top 10 climbers for each category were selected to go through to the Grand Final, based on their score. The competition was fierce, with a huge variety of climbs set around the centre. The most interesting of which was the huge dyno on the back wall, going up to a large volume, which garnered much appreciation from the boulderers at the end of the evening. The overall results for Rounds 1 – 5 are as follows:
1 – Garry Smith
2 – John Golder
3 – John Beesley
4 – James Pratt
5 – Rob Woodward
6 – Aaron Porter
7 – Bradley Diggines
8 – David Miko
9 – Andres Guillen Perez
10- Michael Gilbert
1 – Lizzie Nichols
2 – Juliet Scott
3 – Tilly Reed
4 – Alissa Mardle
5 – Ella Gilbert
6 – Keris Moore
7 – Maddi Benjamin
8 – Gina Parr
9 – Charlotte Bowden
10- Emma Pestell
However, Garry Smith, Aaron Porter and Ella Gilbert couldn’t attend the Grand Final, so their places were taken by Jimmy James, Lottie Bruce and our very own James Potter! On Saturday night, for the Male table John Golder performed outrageously well and absolutely dominated the routes, flashing every single one of them! A huge achievement on these routes set by Dave Barrans, and a well deserved First Place. Furthermore, congratulations and also a huge well done to John Beesley for coming in 2nd, and James Pratt for coming in 3rd! For the Female table, First Place was earned by Lizzy Nichols, who performed incredibly well. For the full write-up of the comp head here!

Over the last month we’ve been piloting a new Youth Climbing Squad with a few of our young climbers. It’s been really good so far and we’ve enjoyed testing out some new training ideas. The pilot ends at the end of October and we’re really excited to announce the date of our first ever Youth Squad Recruitment Day.
The Recruitment Day will take place in Half Term on Wednesday 25 October from 10:00 to 16:00. Our first round of recruitment will be for those born from 2000 to 2005 who are motivated to want to learn, improve and achieve, whether for indoor, outdoor or competition climbing.
A new webpage is being built and will be released asap with more information.
Over the next couple of months we will be repainting and updating some of the bouldering walls and also carrying out further building work to upgrade the centre. The work will begin week commencing Monday 2nd October with the repainting off zone one and the removal of the traverse wall to make room for further bouldering walls. we have a rough plan, this may change – it generally does – so we’ll release information as and when we know exactly what is happening.
We’ve also got more volumes and a brand new circuit on order.. watch this space

A lot of you probably wont recognise me, which is mainly because I work up in that little window above the shop! I’ve not been at highball long, about 2 months to be exact, but I have to say, I absolutely love it here. The other guys have welcomed me into the fold, even though I spent an entire evening throwing towels at Thomas, and it feels like a little family that all look out for each other.
I’ve been climbing for about 2 years, I started out as an avid lead climber, but after a summer of bouldering hard I’ve grown very affectionate of the blocs and their nuances, and it’s nice to be taking part in a sport that I actually enjoy! I’m usually sat indoors in front of a computer working hard at my Masters in Computing Science (Okay, not extremely hard, but i’m making an effort), so getting out and travelling and being in amongst mountains in the fresh air is a lovely reset after working.
I have to say that the thing I love most about climbing and bouldering is the people. I’ve found that no matter where you are climbing in the world and no matter how much better than you the other person is, they’ll happily have a chat an help you figure out how to complete the climb or bloc you’re stuck on.
You might see me bouldering about the centre, or more likely falling off a problem that I’m tackling over and over again non-stop, fervently trying to get the send. Feel free to stop me and say hi any time you want to though, I love chatting and will always want a climbing buddy!
