Round 2 of Highballs Winter Bouldering League was on Friday, featuring blocs on the DMM Comp Wall set by Guy Copland and Thomas Smith. The event was packed out and had some great problems, and everyone, as always, had a great laugh. Keep an eye out for the write-up and final scores coming soon!
The next round, Round 3, will be on December 29th, starting at 14:30. The setting will be done by Nathan Phillips, so look forward to some interesting blocs and possibly a few dyno’s!
The first Monday of every month hosts our Ladies Night. It is a chance for women from all walks of life to come and get involved in bouldering and climbing, and ideal for meeting like minded people.
As a female, you will have the opportunity to get highly discounted introductory sessions, which are great for beginners and those who want to supervise any friends, family, and children. We also have free coaching sessions where you’ll receive professional advice on technique, or just some encouragement to advance that bit further (or even up to the next grade).
Tonight we have Ladies Bouldering Inductions, Ladies Auto-Belay Inductions (must be a competent Boulderer), and Ladies Coaching sessions. Spaces are limited so book online before they fill up! Head here for more.
Don’t forget, we have Gift Cards for Highball! And we all know climbing is one of the most exciting gifts you can give. Why spend hours shopping for something ‘a bit different’ when you can give climbing; an activity guaranteed to put a smile on their face. Or, perhaps an idea of a present for someone looking for your gift?
We have a standard Gift Card, a physical item which is credit card size and we also have an electronic Gift Card which is sent via email.

BUILDING UPDATE: TRAINING AREA AND SQUAD WALL
To open the first floor training area to the public requires the installation of a new staircase which conforms to specific building regulations. Unfortunately, the best solution is not possible as we don’t quite have enough space – we’re short by just 200mm. We are therefore in ongoing discussions with our Architect and Building Control to come up with a pragmatic agreement on a revised location and/or size of the staircase in the very near future.
Please note, the staircase currently in place has been put there to make it safer (than a ladder) for staff or people under full supervision to access the area. It is not for use by the public.
Opening the new wall is much easier in terms of physical work, as all we are waiting for is the safety matting and we’re currently saving hard for the deposit required to get it here.
ZONE 1 – Guy Copland, 6th-7th
NuKids – Guy Copland, 15th
ZONE 2 – Nathan Phillips, 20th-21st

Hi! I’m Jess!
I’ve worked at Highball for about 2 months now. I work in the BetaCafe kitchen and love spending my days surrounded by delicious food – it takes a lot of willpower to not eat everything! (My weakness is the vegan chocolate chip cookies.)
I love working at Highball; all my colleagues are lovely and as mad as I am. If I manage to escape from the kitchen and make a coffee or two, I also get to meet the wonderful customers and have a quick chat. Don’t expect latte art from me, though, I haven’t got time for that nonsense.
Outside of Highball, I am studying Humanities & Social Sciences at college in the hope to become a Psychologist one day. I enjoy baking at home (more cookies!), drinking tea, cycling, hanging with my cat, or making things – sometimes I even go climbing!
Even though I’ve only been working here a short time, I already feel like part of the #HighballFamily and I’d been climbing here for at least a year beforehand so I knew what I was getting myself in to!
Anyway, if you see me about, give me a wave and maybe buy me a cookie. Did I mention I like cookies?!
We have the Wide Boyz Crack School at Highball in the new year…11th February to be exact! Learn a different and unique style of climbing from Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker, the best in the business.
They’ll teach you how to make a pair of crack gloves and put into practice a whole range of jamming techniques. This highly recommended course is booking up fast and with less than 10 spaces remaining make sure you don’t miss out.
It will be a great Christmas present for any keen climber who likes a challenge. Only £30 plus there will be freebies! What’s not to love? Head here to book!
