So, summer has been and gone once again! Well, hopefully it hasn’t, but the temperature has dropped meaning those friction dependant routes you’ve been trying are in a position to be finished.
JULY CLIMBING OFFERS
This July we will be offering 50% off Bouldering Inductions (excluding Ladies night and voucher offers). These sessions are ideal if you want to bring your juniors climbing during the summer holidays, outside of organised sessions, as you will be fully signed off to use our bouldering facilities unsupervised. It is also the quickest and easiest way to get started in the bouldering world, as no previous experience is necessary. Once completed, you can bring up to two novice guests, so get your friends involved too. USE CODE 50JUL17 to redeem the discount!
In preparation for the summer holidays we are also offering 20% off all summer holiday fun sessions, when booked before July 22nd. This applies to online bookings only for Highball Play, Mega Sesh, Bouldering and Climbing Club using the promo code 20SUM17. We are running Highball Play sessions every day and Bouldering and Climbing Clubs at various times during the week, check the website for deets!
SUMMER HOLIDAY PROGRAMME
The summer programme has the usual variety of sessions both for new climbers and those looking to improve or branch out into different areas of the centre. A great way to get your first experience of a climbing wall is on a Highball Play session, which we are running daily for 4 to 16 year olds.
Bouldering and Climbing Club sessions will be running frequently and are available for ages 12 to 17 years. Designed for climbers with some previous experience who are looking to improve their technique. These sessions are ideal for those looking to join our NICAS and NIBAS junior coaching programme in September and want to get a head start, as well as existing candidates looking to complete any additional sections of the syllabus.
New for this summer, we are introducing a Green Card deal for 14 to 16 year olds. Any young climber that would like to climb in the centre unsupervised must be signed off by one of our instructors, as well as a parent. To gain this privilege, individuals must attend 3 instructor led bouldering club sessions, and complete a short written questionnaire, whereupon, if instructor, parent and climber are happy, they will be signed off to use our centre unsupervised.
With a one off payment of £55.00, a young climber can book a 3 hour long sessions to complete a “Green Card” and subsequently unlimited climbing for the summer holiday period. Give us a call on 01603 513513 to book.
NICAS AND NIBAS HOLIDAY PROGRAMME
As per usual, we will be running NICAS and NIBAS club sessions during the summer holiday period. Saturday mornings will be set aside for those who wish to keep their hand in and get some additional tuition and log a few more climbs and belays or just get signed off towards achieving the next level.
NICAS Club is running Saturday mornings 0930-1100
NIBAS Club is running Saturday mornings 0930-1045
It is possible to just drop in, although booking is advised. We have a 10% off deal if you book 6 or more in one go.

SHOP OFFERS FOR JULY
This month in the shop we will be offering 20% off all Injinji socks. They may look a little weird but they are by far the comfiest socks I have ever worn. If you are a runner, the benefits are much greater than just being comfy as they also stop moisture from building up between your toes, which causes friction, while allowing your toes to splay and align naturally make them feel great while you run.
We will also be offering 20% off all children’s clothing and climbing shoes. We stock the Scarpa Instinct J slipper for our junior climbers and have a full range of sizes, from childs UK 10 to adults UK 5. Our junior clothing range which includes t-shirts hoodies and trousers come from Moon and E9.
Along with these two offers we are also doing a few spot discounts this month. Firstly, the Snap Quarter Pounder bouldering pad on offer this month for a crazy £155 (was £210)! This pad is extremely versatile and can be used as one big pad or two smaller pads. It can also be folded over rocks, unlike a taco type, making it very handy for some of those Peak landings.
The first round of Zonal setting was completed last month, and this month we continue with the resetting of the zones. This is where one of the biggest pluses for Zonal will be seen. This is the ability to move all of the volumes around the zone and add new ones, allowing for the walls to climb in a different way. This month we will see Zones 2 and 3 get reset. After the first full round of Zonal setting we have made a few tweaks to the Zones as we felt, some were too big and some to small.
THE LITTLE FLASH – 22 JULY 2017
It’s now only 3 weeks until our flagship junior event The Little Flash takes place, Each of the 3 qualification sessions are filling up to what looks set to be a great competition. We will once again be welcoming Rob Napier and Jack to the centre to help set the qualification blocs alongside our in house setters Guy Copland and Thomas Smith, Rob and Jack set the final last year and will be hoping to repeat what was a great set last year.

There are 6 pizza nights lined up this month, 6th, 13th, 20th, 22nd (little flash), 27th and 28th (round 3) July.
You may have noticed that Drench is no longer stocked, we are aiming to reduce the amount of plastic we use and have started using Vegware which is fully compostable packaging, this month we will be starting to introduce our own drinks, keep an eye on the fridge to see when they are in!
Iced coffee will also be available on the July menu, just ask a member of kitchen staff for more details.
SUMMER BOULDERING LEAGUE
This month we were set to see our favourite French man return to set Round 3 of SBL17 but he has had to cancel due to being asked once again to set the IFSC Lead World Cup in Briancon France. We will be seeing Matt Birch return for his first ever full set on the DMM competition wall, expect some proper projects at the top end.
VIEW FROM THE CREW –
I started working here about 3 months ago, but have been frequently climbing here for over 3 years. Being on the other side of the desk for so many years meant that I already knew a lot of the regular climbers and staff, so seemed to fit right in. Everyone at Highball has been so welcoming and extremely helpful fitting shifts in around my whacky schedule, due to looking after my 1 year old son during the day (Who I am looking forward to get on the walls in the not too distant future).
The staff and climbers here are all such awesome people, and there is always such a great atmosphere. It still seems surreal that I actually work here, I’m just super grateful to be part of the team.
