November Blog & View from the crew: JO!

October 27, 2016 12:36 pm

We love this time of year; the nights draw in, the temperature becomes more suited to climbing, there’s a post Flash buzz about the place and it won’t be long before everyone is walking around in beanies and down jackets… . We may even see the return of ‘Burger Nights’ and Curry Nights’..

Just a quick one to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who came, climbed, competed, volunteered and ultimately donated. It was an amazing weekend, the busiest by far, and therefore fitting that we smashed our £4000 fundraising target.

We raised and amazing £4380 which will be split between Climbers Against Cancer and The East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Huge thank you’s our event partners: DMM; Tenaya; RAB; Beta Climbing Designs

We’re currently looking into extending our opening hours but before we can do this, we need some time to sort a few things out behind the scenes. To create the time we need, we will be opening later (at 2pm) on Mondays during November and then, in December (Before christmas), were planning on opening from 2pm Monday to Friday – this will be confirmed later this month .

For more full info and a sneak peak at Christmas opening, click here.

We have now received our Autumn and Winter stock from RAB, E9 and PRANA. These are all now out in the shop, feel free to ask to try any of the new items on. We are now stocking what has to be the best Prana range in East Anglia with some awesome winter climbing trousers like the Axiom Jean and The Bridger jean both a firm staff favorite. We also have a few warmer pieces from Rab which include their Vapour Rise jacket (Mike pretty much lives in his!)

Tom’s mega sale rail was a great success and we hope you all managed to get some great deals, We have now put together a Autumn sale so if you’re looking to grabs some bargains from Moon, E9, Black Diamond, Edelrid or Chillaz nows your chance.

Greens will be changing their position at Highball moving into the Blues spot on their next set. Yellows will then move down to the Green position and Blues will become the new Winter League Circuit.

Oranges will once again move back to being our junior circuit and the Pinks will move back to being the Nukids circuit. A little confusing but will all make sense in the end please bare with us while we make these changes as it means some circuits will be up for longer and some shorter than normal, be sure to keep an eye on the Circuit Grading Charts!!!

Hi, I joined the Highball Kitchen Crew just under a month ago.

My first weekend in was The Big Flash! This took a lot a preparation the week before but, thankfully, I had Adam with me showing me how everything was done, as some of the food I had never done before, mainly the pizzas!

I had no idea what to expect during the festival, I had heard it gets really busy! So, not wanting to run out of food, I constantly had something to do, whether it was making sandwiches and pasties, or putting together the rolls for the hog roast!

I am looking forward to the next few months as Adam is going to do some more training with me so I can improve my skills and we’ve got some great plans to bring in some new food and cakes!

With Autumn now upon us temperatures within the centre will begin to drop. Believe it or not, this is great news as friction will start to increase as the climbing holds feel less ‘greasy’. Wearing layers is key to keeping warm during the colder months and we’ve two great articles on the website which we’d highly recommend reading or re-reading to remind yourselves on How to Keep Warm at Highball and also Warming Up, which was written by Climbing Physio’s Lewie Weatherburn.

The Guide: Keeping Warm This Winter

The Guide: Lewie’s Warm-Up

On Friday 5 November we’ll be hosting our 4th Annual evening for the UEA Climbing Club (formally Friction). We’ll be running some extra bouldering inductions on the night, plus we’ll have a Scarpa Boot Demo (TBC) and as in previous years, some great offers on Scarpa Shoes and DMM Climbing Equipment.

Note: The centre is still open to the public.

With ‘Flash psyche’ running through our veins, it’s time to turn our attention to the Winter Bouldering League. As usual there will be 4 rounds, each with 30 blocs. Each round is an event in itself, with prizes given out via the 9:30pm Raffle, plus the excellent ‘play your cards right where one lucky player will win a minimum £25 jackpot!! ooOOOoo

For those looking to take it more seriously, we will be bringing the series to an end with a Grand Final, as we did for the Summer Bouldering League. To qualify for the Grand Final, your best 3 scores will be totalled up – so you’ll need to enter a minimum of 3 rounds – with the top 10 male and females competing on the DMM Comp Wall in a timed final – similar to The Flash Championship semi final.

For more information go to our dedicated comp page.
