This was the first Nukids competition since the Nukids Masters in April and the room was packed out! We saw lots of new faces and lots of lovely familiar ones too. It was especially great to see the amount of juniors who entered, and the male/female split becoming less and less. Congratulations to those who scored 257 or higher, which was the ‘Top Gun’ score. First place winners in the Senior category were Robyn Lindsay and Sam Yeomans, the Veteran winner was Joe Martin. And the winners for Junior groups B, C, & D were Katie Fisher/Sam Maddox, Beth Barnard/Finn Duncan, and Charlotte Bowden/Oscar Preston respectively.
The staff were kept very busy all evening, from being vigilant for the safety of the climbers, to keeping on top of the high demand in the cafe, not to mention Jo smashing out the pizzas as always. They did, however, have time to observe the climbing that was going on and one staff member said they enjoyed watching the problem on the DMM Comp Wall slab immensely – ‘it was really fun to watch the terror in peoples faces’! We received lots of feedback on the night and over the weekend, we are happy to hear the wonderful things people have said. “Sam’s [Pestell] progress has been massive since the last comp, which is amazing to see” says mum, Julia. She went on to say, his brother, Ben, is ‘super happy about top gunning for the first time!’ Mia came up from Highsports Climbing Gym in Basildon with their junior squad; ‘[the squad] had an absolute blast and it really inspired them to see other climbers of their age to do so well. The setting was superb and it was a really great atmosphere’.
As always, we held the raffle at the end of the evening which meant many of you walked away with goodies. Some of the lucky winners were; Ross who won 1 month free coffee; Coby and Stan who won chalk bags; Charlotte and Lucas went away with Friction Labs chalk; Janina got a t-shirt; and Tessa got a 10-climb pass (worth £65)! We also played the Highball favourite, Play Your Cards Right, which gave raffle winner, Stephen, the chance to win £50! The first card drawn was an 8 (always a tricky number!), and with encouragement from the audience went for ‘Lower’. Unfortunately, the game ended swiftly when a King appeared up next. This means the prize will roll over to the next Nukids competition, when someone could be in with a chance of winning £75!
