Summer Bouldering LeagueRound 1 of the Summer League was a different experience to the Winter League in many ways. First and foremost was that the event returned to the DMM Comp Wall. This changed the whole dynamic and gave a great community feel to the event as competitors watched and encouraged each other.

The general consensus was Jason Pickles provided us with a harder than average set of blocs, but this could be because of the change of wall angle. The DMM Comp Wall has more severe angles and volumes than when the comp was set around the centre, which tends to make the blocs feel quite strong, however, there’s still some slabby parts to balance it out. Holding the Summer League on this wall gives the climbers the opportunity to experience a different style of climbing, route setting, and a taste of what to expect if they make it into the final.

The staff enjoyed the change from a whole centre based competition to the comp wall. They were able to ensure the safety of the climbers easier, as well as enjoy the show. There was a lot of positive feedback from non-competitors as it allowed them to climb freely on the other walls. Parents, spectators, and supervisors also liked the fact that they had more visibility to watch what was going on.

There was a great vibe on the night, what with Jo smashing out the pizzas, filling the air with the sweet aroma of stone-baked dough. We saw lots of new faces, and even some who had traveled especially for the event. Overall, it was great to see everyone taking part and enjoying themselves, which is what climbing is all about. The summer league will have 5 rounds and the minimum requirement to make the final is to complete 3 rounds, so don’t worry if you missed out on this one. It’s going to be a great summer!
