CLIMBING FOR TEENAGERS

Climbing is a fantastic activity for teenagers. It’s exciting, social (and keeps them active off the pesky gaming consoles) and develops good balance, coordination and strength.

All climbers under 18 must be supervised by an adult (18+) who has completed suitable registration, or a member of the Highball Team as part of a pre-booked ‘supervised climbing session’, however….

Teenagers have an ever developing awareness of risk and self preservation and whilst not officially adults until they turn 18, they are permitted to ride mopeds, drive cars and (shockingly) get married. This is also reflected within the climbing industry. Most climbing centres have a progressive approach to teenagers and the general standard is that Teenagers aged 14+ can work towards gaining unsupervised access and those aged 16+ have similar access to adults.

Our system is called a GREENCARD – Read More.

A Taster Session is a supervised group climbing session with one of our qualified climbing instructors. Their sole purpose is to get you climbing and bouldering safely, and have fun! Be warned: you may feel it in your arms the next day – in a good way! It’s a group session for up to 6 people so, a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.Bouldering is climbing at a lower level (up to 4.5meters) without a rope or harness. Whilst the floor is covered in a soft mat, it does not make bouldering safe. Our instructors aim to maximise bouldering time whilst also reinforcing safe practice, promoting self preservation and helping young climbers develop basic climbing techniques, helping them to become independent, considerate boulderers.

WHAT IS A GREENCARD?

A GREENCARD allows teenagers aged 14+ to climb and/or boulder without the supervision of an adult. It is a privilege earned by displaying safe climbing under supervision, and having an understanding and acceptance of the risks. Teenagers who wishing to climb unsupervised must attend a course or a number of supervised sessions before taking the unsupervised access test in the presence of a parent or guardian*.

Note: A GREENCARD is a privilege, not a right. Young climbers who climb dangerously or behave immaturely risk having their GREENCARD removed.

Teenagers aged 14+ who want to have unsupervised access to the bouldering walls will need to attend BOULDERINGCLUB

Once the climber shows a clear understanding of the risks of indoor bouldering and demonstrates consistent safe bouldering and behaviour, the instructor will ask the climber to invite their parent/guardian to join them for the sign off briefing*. 16 & 17 year olds can opt for direct access via the Bouldering Induction.
Teenagers wanting to use both climbing and bouldering walls without supervision will need to demonstrate how to use a harness and belay device safely.

Once the young climber can demonstrate consistent safe use of climbing equipment and shows and understanding of climbing risks and how to climb safely, the instructor will then ask the climber to invite their parent/guardian to join them for the sign off briefing*. 16 & 17 year olds can opt for direct access via the Intro to Climbing Course

FAQS

I’M AGED 14+ AND HAVE PREVIOUS CLIMBING EXPERIENCE AT ANOTHER CLIMBING CENTRE. DO I NEED TO ATTEND A SUPERVISED SESSION?

If you feel you have the necessary experience and ability to climb without supervision, contact the Coaching Team directly and provide details of your climbing history and experience. They will then ask you to come in for an initial assessment and advise on the next steps. Email the team: CoachingTeam@highballnorwich.co.uk

*The Sign Off involves a briefing with the Junior candidate followed by a written unsupervised access test. During the briefing the parent/guardian will be guided round the centre by their teenage climber and an instructor. The young climber will be required to explain their knowledge of climbing safety and use of any equipment, the risks and how to minimise them. Parents are welcome to ask questions to both the instructor and climber. Once the tour is complete, IF the parent/guardian is happy to allow their child to climb without supervision, they then both complete the ‘sign off’ by filling out a junior unsupervised climbing form.
