JUNIOR CLIMBING & BOULDERING COACHING

JUNIOR COACHING PROGRAM – NICAS and NIBAS

Highball Climbing Centre is an awarding centre for NICAS (National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme) and NIBAS (National Indoor Bouldering Award Scheme). Both schemes consist of 5 awards which provide structured coaching, development and achievement for aspirant young climbers.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

NICAS focuses on Indoor Climbing and Bouldering whilst NIBAS focuses solely on Bouldering. Both schemes have 5 awarding levels which can take a young climber from a complete beginner to a highly -skilled, independent climber/boulderer who can not only climb well, but understands the risks of the sport and how to keep themselves and others safe.

Each level requires a minimum number of hours instruction, personal commitment and consolidation, which increases at each stage i.e. the hours required at Level 2 are higher than Level 1 etc.. Candidates use logbooks to record their climbs and coaches assess progress using specific assessment criteria.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO ACHIEVE EACH LEVEL?

Everyone learns in different ways, so the answer could be ‘how long is a piece of string’. Each level has a minimum number of hours for instructing/coaching, personal commitment and consolidation. These hours increase at every stage as the content and assessment criteria becomes more detailed. There is no maximum duration for each level, candidates will be continually assessed during sessions, working towards their individual goals.

For example most candidates will achieve NIBAS level 1 in twelve weeks, older children and teenagers may achieve level 1 in six weeks, some other candidates may take longer.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Young climbers will not only develop their climbing skills and safety awareness, they will also develop social skills, problem solving and motor skills including balance and coordination. Candidates are allowed to develop at their own pace, recording their achievements in a logbook, and, if they progress to the latter stages of the scheme, will be performing at GCSE standard.
