Summer’s arrived, the Summer Bouldering League 2017 has started and Thursday evenings are filled with the smell of pizzas and perspiration (and lynx/sure etc..). As the temperatures increase so will the need for chalk so, apply it well (clap/rub off any excess before pulling on) and don’t forget to brush the holds after use!
RANDOM ACTS OF NAKEDNESS..
We know it can get very warm at times and whilst a lot of climbing centres have a strict ‘keep your tops on’ policy, we’re happy to be a bit more liberal; all we ask is that you keep your tops on during peak children/family times and certainly when in or around the cafe. There is a difference between a beach when you’re out in the sun/sea/fresh air and smelling of Hawaiian Tropic) and an exercise/gym environment where you are sweating like [insert favourite ‘sweating like’ phrase] due to increased aerobic activity and yes, you will (do) smell after a while.
Note from Mike – Trust me on this! I climbed on Tuesday and despite applying a good spray to each pit before starting, after my 60 minute warm up, I definitely had an aroma and my vest was wetter than a [insert favourite wetter than phrase].
If you really feel you climb better half naked, a logical approach would be:
Tops Off: Weekdays – avoid 4pm till 6pm – and evenings.
Tops On: Most of the time at weekends (if busy with groups and birthday parties), and when at the cafe.
JUNE CLIMBING OFFERS – UP TO 50% OFF
In June we’re offering 50% off Taster Sessions, Bouldering Inductions and Intro to Climbing Courses. These are great if you’re still being supervised by a friend, or have friends you’ve meaning to bring along. The intro to climbing course is also a great way to progress from Bouldering on to the higher climbing walls as you’ll learn how to use all the cool shiney climbing equipment! It’s also great for parents who want to supervise their children.
The offer applies to online booking only! Online Booking Code: 50JUN17

The second offer this month is just for the ladies (or you gents after some brownie points!): 20% off all womens clothing. Now really is the time to get those items you have been tempted by, plus it will make you climb harder!!!!
SUMMER OPENING HOURS CONTINUE
We announced last month that we have introduced some extended Summer Opening Hours, opening from 10am, Tuesday to Friday until end of August and maybe September depending on your feedback. Let us know what you think!
Our first wave of Zonal setting is now well under way with 3 zones done and a new 40 bloc set on the comp wall. This just leaves the cave and the rear and right hand side of the boulder. So far, all the feedback has been very positive with everyone saying how much they have enjoyed this new way of setting and the use of volumes. We’ve even had a number of unexpected comment from various people saying it has pushed them to try different coloured circuits in the zone that’s just been set, which can only be a great thing. Once we get round to the second set at the end of this month you will also see one of the other major pluses with this kind of setting and that’s the ability to move all the volumes around again changing how that particular zone climbs.

THE LITTLE FLASH – 22 JULY 2017
THE LITTLE FLASH, our annual Youth Bouldering Competition, returns in July!! Last year’s event was described by a number of parents and junior competitors as ‘one of the best youth bouldering comps in the country’, which was amazing considering it was our first event focused only on younger climbers. We welcomed competitors from London, Sheffield amongst others. So, for our local Juniors nows the time to target that training and get prepped ready for the 22nd of July. The only changes we have made this year are that the event will run over one day instead of two and we have now gone with the IFSC age categories. Both these changes come from suggestions made by parents last year.

We’ve lots coming online for the summer, including a new daily menu, weekend brunch menu, and we’re also going to make the jump to using 100% compostable packaging for the first time. If you like your coffee and ice cream, then check out our updated ‘iced coffee’ menu featuring Affagato’s, Fraps and Iced Coffee’s.. Adam has also promised to make some home-made ice cream! Keep an eye out for the new menus.
SUMMER BOULDERING LEAGUE

VIEW FROM THE CREW –
Hi I’m Josh, the new food making person!
I had been climbing at highball for almost 3 years before I started to work in the cafe so I had a pretty good idea of what it might be like. It has certainly met my expectations; A chilled out atmosphere with a bunch of goofy climbers, we get stuff done too.
Since February I have been learning new recipes from Jo and Adam and trying to come up with my own. I’m happy to hear suggestions and especially vegan ones! I’m looking forward to the summer as we’re working on a few new menu items which I hope will be delicious.
Stone baked pizzas on a Thursday is definitely my favorite new skill learned. I’m working on my toe hooks too.
See you on the wall,
